Industrial Visit to Finolex Power Plant, Ranpar
The Department of Mechanical Engineering of Finolex Academy of Management and Technology (FAMT), Ratnagiri, organized an Industrial Visit to the Finolex Power Plant, Ranpar, Ratnagiri, for the Third Year Mechanical Engineering students in two batches on 28th March 2026 and 4th April 2026. This visit was arranged as a mandatory component of the laboratory course Turbomachinery (MEL602), with the objective of providing students with practical exposure to thermal power plant operations.
During the visit, the students were introduced to the overall layout and functioning of the power plant. The technical staff at the plant explained the complete process of power generation, starting from fuel handling to electricity generation. Students observed the coal handling and crushing unit, where raw coal is processed before combustion. They were then guided through the boiler section, where the conversion of water into high-pressure steam was explained in detail.
The visit further included an in-depth understanding of the steam turbine operation, where students learned how thermal energy is converted into mechanical energy, and subsequently into electrical energy through generators. The functioning of the cooling tower and its role in heat rejection and maintaining thermal efficiency of the plant were also demonstrated. In addition, students gained insights into environmental control systems, particularly the electrostatic precipitator, which is used to control particulate emissions and reduce air pollution. The importance of safety measures, maintenance practices, and operational control systems in a power plant was also emphasized during the visit.
A total of 86 students actively participated in the industrial visit. The entire activity was well-coordinated by Prof. V. S. Bagade and Prof. S. U. Mayekar, who ensured smooth execution and student engagement throughout the visit.
