Expert Session on Ransomware Insights: The Silent Digital Extortion Threat
An Expert session on “Ransomware Insights: The Silent Digital Extortion Threat” was organized by the Computer Science and Engineering (CS) Department at Finolex Academy of Management and Technology, Ratnagiri, on 21st January 2026 at 10:15 AM, in EN 1/15.
The session on cybersecurity was conducted to create awareness among students about ransomware attacks, current industry trends, job opportunities, and essential tools used in the cybersecurity domain. Mr. Akshay Lad, an alumnus of the Electronics Engineering Department, 2012 Batch, FAMT, currently working as a Lead Cyber Security Engineer in RB Global, Dallas, Texas, USA, having 10 years of experience in the Cyber Security domain, was the resource person for this expert session. During the session, Mr. Akshay explained the fundamentals of ransomware attacks, including how such attacks are executed, common entry points such as phishing emails and malicious links, and their severe impact on individuals, organizations, and critical infrastructure. Real-world examples were discussed to help students understand the consequences of ransomware incidents, such as data loss, financial damage, and operational disruption.
He also elaborated on the latest industry trends in cybersecurity, highlighting the increasing demand for skilled professionals due to the rapid growth of digitalization and cyber threats. Emerging areas such as cloud security, network security, ethical hacking, and incident response were discussed, along with the growing importance of cybersecurity in various sectors, including IT, banking, healthcare, and government organizations. The session provided valuable insights into career opportunities available in the cybersecurity field, such as security analyst, penetration tester, SOC analyst, cyber forensics expert, and ethical hacker, motivating students to consider cybersecurity as a promising career path. A total of 48 students actively participated in and attended the expert session, demonstrating keen interest in cybersecurity concepts and career opportunities.
