BIS Standards Club’s Exposure Visit to Associate Cables Pvt. Ltd, Chiplun

The Department of Electrical Engineering, in association with the Standards Club, BIS, organized an industrial visit to Associate Cables Pvt. Ltd., Chiplun on 03 February 2025. A total of 25 students participated in this visit, accompanied by the faculty mentor Prof. Nikhil N. Kasar. The visit aimed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical industry applications by exposing students to the standards used in cable manufacturing and BIS testing procedures. Additionally, it sought to provide insight into career opportunities within the electrical industry.

The journey commenced at 7:45 AM as the students and faculty departed from the college campus. During the trip, students were briefed on the visit’s objectives and the significance of BIS standards in the cable industry. The bus reached Associate Cables Pvt. Ltd. at 10:45 AM, where the students were warmly welcomed by company representatives. Refreshments were arranged for the visiting team before proceeding with the day’s agenda.

The session began with a welcome address and industry briefing by Mr Rameshwar Mahale, the Plant Head. He provided a comprehensive overview of the industry’s policies, manufacturing processes, and safety protocols.

Following the briefing, the students were taken on a detailed tour of the cable manufacturing units. They observed the various stages of production, including raw material selection, extrusion, sheathing, and final testing of cables. A highlight of the visit was an in-depth demonstration at the Testing Laboratory under BIS, where students witnessed key quality control tests such as:

  • Flammability Test: Evaluating fire resistance properties of cables.
  • Tensile Test: Assessing the mechanical strength and durability of cables.
  • LCR Parameter Test: Measuring inductance (L), capacitance (C), and resistance (R) values.
  • Smoke Test: Determining the amount of smoke generated under fire conditions.
  • High Voltage (HV) Test: Checking insulation properties under high voltage conditions.

These tests gave students a practical understanding of the stringent safety and performance standards that cables must meet before being introduced into the market. The visit also included a tour of the Forklift Area, where students gained insights into material handling techniques within an industrial setup. The importance of safety protocols in forklift operation was explained, reinforcing the role of structured logistics in manufacturing industries.

As the visit concluded, Prof. Nikhil N. Kasar delivered a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to Associate Cables Pvt. Ltd. for their hospitality and the detailed insights provided. He extended appreciation to Mr Rameshwar Mahale and his team for their efforts in visiting a success.
