About Information Technology Department
Recent advancements in computers, software, networks, the internet, communication technology, Big Data, and cloud computing have made vast amounts of information readily available. In this high-tech era, information is essential for both industry and individuals; their success hinges on acquiring accurate and timely data. To address this need, FAMT launched the Bachelor of Engineering program in Information Technology (IT) in the academic year 2001-2002.
The B.E. in Information Technology curriculum emphasizes Computer Science, Software Development, Networking, Communication, Web Engineering, Security, Multimedia Processing, IoT, Cloud Computing, Data Analytics, and Machine Learning. The department’s infrastructure includes three classrooms, six laboratories, a staffroom, and a seminar hall. All classrooms are equipped with ICT and Wi-Fi projection, with one classroom featuring an interactive smart panel. Wi-Fi connectivity is available throughout the department.
The IT department comprises 13 faculty members, including two Ph.D.s and 11 postgraduates, with six faculty members currently pursuing their Ph.D. The department boasts 120 computers with the latest configurations and ICT equipment such as LCD projectors, printers, and scanners. Additionally, it has an academic collaboration with NVIDIA for three subjects: Soft Computing, Big Data Analytics, and Robotics. NVIDIA provides course materials and hardware support for these courses and bridge courses. The department has also conducted bridge courses in Mobile Cloud Computing, MongoDB Connectivity, and Online Payments for E-Biz to prepare students for the industry.
The IT Department has partnerships with Microsoft Virtual Academy, Oracle Academy, and Palo Alto Network Academy to offer training and certification for students and staff in Networking, Databases, IoT, and Cyber Security. The first session of this training was conducted in September 2017. The IT Department also hosts the only research center in IT in the Konkan region, with four Ph.D. scholars currently pursuing their research under Mumbai University.
Students engage in on-field projects to prepare for professional challenges. From January 2023 to November 2024, final-year students published 16 research papers at various national and international conferences and journals. These papers covered research areas such as Cloud Computing, Ubiquitous Computing, Pervasive Computing, and Soft Computing. In-house training for GATE examinations, aptitude tests, and other competitive exams is also provided.
The department’s student body, “FAMT-ACM Student’s Chapter,” actively promotes technological awareness among students. The chapter organizes events like group discussions, online quizzes, workshops, seminars, and industrial visits to keep students updated on the latest technological advancements. They also coordinate charity and environmental protection events, such as blood donation drives, aid for drought-affected farmers, beach cleanups, and tree-planting initiatives.
The department offers comprehensive support for student training and placement. Regular recruiters include Capgemini, Accenture, Benchmark System, Infocenter, Stacklabs, and TCS. Faculty members have published over 16 patents, with 10 granted, and Dr. Vinayak Bharadi recently received two patents. Students and faculty have also copyrighted their research work, with 14 copyrights received in AY 2022-23 and 15 filed so far in AY 2023-24.
In conclusion, the Information Technology department at FAMT is dedicated to fostering a robust educational environment that equips students with the skills and knowledge required to excel in the rapidly evolving tech industry. Through its comprehensive curriculum, cutting-edge infrastructure, and strong industry collaborations, the department ensures that students are well-prepared to meet professional challenges and succeed in their careers. The commitment to research and innovation is evident in the numerous patents, publications, and academic partnerships that enhance the learning experience. Additionally, the active involvement of the FAMT-ACM Student’s Chapter and the department’s support for training and placements underscore the holistic approach to education and student development. As the department continues to grow and adapt to technological advancements, it remains a beacon of excellence and opportunity for aspiring IT professionals.
