National Service Scheme (NSS) is an Indian government-sponsored public service program. The NSS day was launched in the year 1969 which is the 100th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Father of Nation. The scheme aimed to develop students’ personalities. Mahatma Gandhi always supported and motivated youth to participate in the Indian Independence movement. The NSS programme aims to create a sense of social welfare among students and to provide service to society without any bias. NSS works with a motto ‘NOT ME BUT YOU’. NSS Volunteers work to help needy people to improve their standard of living and lead a life of dignity. NSS Volunteers also play a vital role in dealing with natural and man-made disasters by providing food, clothing and first aid to the victims.
Ms A. A. Chavan also explained the meaning of the NSS symbol. The NSS symbol consists of the “Rath” wheel of the Konark Sun Temple, Orissa. It symbolizes the cycle of creation, preservation and release, and different movements in life. The Red colour indicates that the NSS volunteers are full of life and are very active, energetic and full of high spirit. The navy blue colour indicates the cosmos i.e. world and NSS is a tiny part of it. But NSS aims very high and is ready to contribute to the welfare of mankind.
